The book Homegrown is a compilation of my best botanical shots taken between 2021 and 2024. The work is the natural follow-up to Homegrown, a series of photographs commissioned by the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands in 2019 that were exhibited and subsequently acquired by the museum. Whereas the images taken in Cayman were of endemic and endangered plants of the archipelago, the images in the book were taken exclusively in my garden in Pasadena. These portraits are as much a portrayal of the artist’s conversation about his surroundings and inhabitants as they are a record of the subjects taken.
The photographs in this series are idiosyncratic visual investigations of the specific plants set before the artist. They magnify our gaze of these plants, first through the instrument of the camera and lens, but also through complex manipulation of their production and post-production processes.
